How to Measure Band Size Correctly: Debunking the +4 Sizing Rule
Learn how to measure your underbust consistently and use the result as a starting point for bra-band sizing.
How to Measure the Underbust
A bra band is one part of the overall fit. The goal is a secure, comfortable measurement that can be compared with the target garment chart:
- Keep the tape level around the torso.
- Measure snugly without digging the tape into the skin.
A band that rides up or feels uncomfortable is a reason to reassess the overall fit, including band tension, cup fit, strap adjustment, and garment construction.
Optional Tight Underbust Reference
- Loose Underbust: Tape is relaxed; skin is lightly touched.
- Snug Underbust: Moderate tension; your ideal band feeling.
- Tight Underbust: Exhale all air and pull the tape as tight as humanly possible without breaking it.
A tighter measurement can provide additional context, but BraSizePRO does not use a fixed difference threshold to prescribe a smaller band. Compare your measurements with the specific manufacturer's chart and the actual garment fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about sizing methods, measurements, and fit considerations.
How tight should a bra band actually feel?
A new bra should feel snug and secure on the LOOSEST hook. You should be able to slide only two fingers under the band comfortably. It should stay completely horizontal around your torso without sliding up when you raise your arms.
Why do bra bands have three or four rows of hooks?
Always buy a bra that fits on the loosest outer hook. Over months of wear and washing, the elastic fibers will gradually stretch. You can then move inward to the tighter hooks to maintain firm support throughout the bra's lifespan.
